"In Game Bot Support": placing player character NPCs

Postby Finigini » Mon Jan 01, 2018 2:16 am

It was mentioned in Jorb's stream (https://youtu.be/9Fk05pmhr6I?t=6676) that he would be in favor of players being able to place NPCs in the world. It would be cool if there was an option to make a character into an NPC when you log out. You would choose what to have your NPC character do while you are offline (harvest crops, defend property, feed animals, anything botable, ect). I'm guessing this would take a considerable amount of work but would have big implications. The world would feel more alive with more Hearthling characters constantly in the world. Simple aspects of the game that people do not enjoy can be left to their NPC character. Farming with NPCs for example would feel like waiting for a curio to study, rather than spending 30 minutes of your actual play time harvesting.

If that is how you harvest then you are playing it wrong XD
You can basically target an 30x30 area and let your heartling do the work, while playing on a different account or watching youtube.

There are already a lot of bot implications like these.

Many people have farm plots MUCH larger than 30x30, and then throw wide array of plants, not to mention seed rotating with carrots

What i meant is that a character can harvest a 30x30 area without any attention at all from the player, not that farms are only 30x30
That should take some time, even with horse and scythe, perfect time to do something else.

NPCs could take care of your animals when you're away for too long.

Could be taught like old macros, where you'd press a recording button and then it could be replayed. But instead the NPC would mimic you.

NPC would work for food, and if the food was over it would get drunk with your beer and wine, and start skipping work. Eventually it would run away with your wife and dogs.

Devs could add automatic drinking and replanting to the already existing tool which would make farming a lot easier.

There is an argument to be made that progress comes from following precisely these stranger kinds of leads. I am not ideologically opposed to this idea, but I do have to wonder where it ultimately leads.
