Gruit

Postby Blueberry » Thu Feb 01, 2018 12:36 am

Wikipedia says: "Gruit (alternately grut or gruyt) is a herb mixture used for bittering and flavouring beer, popular before the extensive use of hops. Gruit or grut ale may also refer to the beverage produced using gruit.

Historically, gruit is the term used in an area today covered by the Netherlands, Belgium and westernmost Germany. Today however, gruit is a colloquial term for any beer seasoned with gruit-like herbs.

The earliest reference to gruit dates from the late 10th century..."

Many herbs were used to make this drink and two of them are already in game, yarrow and juniper berries. Let us make gruit, we could always use more ways to get drunk! :D

Instead of hops, just require "flavor enhancer"... could be a variety of fruits or herbs, but what would the game effect be? Any?

There have been speculations that the Reinheitsgebot (beer) had been introduced by religious types as a consequence of beers crafted with other substances that induced side effects like spasms (interpreted as posession by evil), hallucinations (which then could well lead to unwanted things like critical thinking - we don't want that, do we?) or sudden demise (more unlikely as the ones who brewed the stuff usually knew what they have been doing, prior to them being burned at the stake).

Since we already have the opium effect, it could be recycled for 'classical' beer versions.
While being at side effects: blacking out (from drinking much) should be re-introduced.

Wouldn't mind that!
