i was thinking about self sustaining worlds and all that and metal came to mind and the first thing i thought of were rock golems.

monsters you can find underground like trolls. except stronger. when dead you can mine them for ore. the ore you get depends on the level you're on.

if you have a better idea for infinite metal, lets hear it. "prayer for metal" isnt in the game yet, and was a painfully slow way of getting it anyway.

Mines collapse and regenerate after a certain amount of time. That's it.
Make friends with the other crabs or try to escape the bucket.

but that defeats the purpose of mine supports.

Quite arguably, decay should be present below ground just as above ground, which would take care of mine supports on expired claims in due time.

that would work. like i said, i got to thinkin about how you and jorb wanted a world that could last forever. and i got to thinking of metal.

Yeah, but it'd be such a huge pain the claim an entire mine. Have you seen how long mines get?

Perhaps that's another argument for it, though.
