It's an old idea that isnt implemented and is a new idea to me
Stains for wood using pigments and some other oil-type ingredient (not linseed, something else, something new) that will change the base color but show the wood grain when applied.
I've been told that "I havent added anything to the conversation" so let me
more eloquently explain my idea and see if there's enough "new content" to avoid it being locked as "suggested a million times".
I understand why the idea of paint for buildings is not a thing. It would completely cover the wood's intended appearance, making the intricate system we currently have obsolete as well as making different species of trees meaningless except for those which have edible fruits.
But, a stain is different. A stain adds a mostly transparent colored tint on top of the wood, while still allowing the natural wood grain and base color to show through. For that reason, the identical stain placed on a cypress board in real life will still make the board look different from a maple board with the identical stain.
I dont know if the coding/engine of this game allows layers, but I know graphically, it is EASY to add a color layer over an image and turn down the opacity of that layer until the layer beneath shows through, effectively "staining" the layer below. I do it often with a free photo editing program.
Another twist to my idea which may make it unique is that wood boards and blocks will have to be stained before building begins. If you build with natural wood color, you are stuck with natural wood color, but if you stain the board or block before you build, it will apply that less opaque color layer to the end result so the color of your product/building will be infinitely unique.
