With small changes, we could turn the Salt Basin to a natural mineral/hot spring. It could give seltzer water, which in turn could be used with various roots and berries to create sort of a primitive sort of sports drink.
It sounds a bit odd, but if we implemented mineral water, its function could be a bit interesting!
Quick stamina restoration, hunger reduction, maybe a small and short buff to certain attributes?
And with that, a debuff/wound could be added called Dehydration. The bonuses that salt gives could be leveled a bit with it. With dehydration, stamina could be cut by a percentage until healed or with a nice, refreshing drink (here's where mineral water can come in

I'm not super positive on proper implementation, but it would make it so that you still have the same number of limited resources while making salt a more common ingredient.
To be honest, I feel like I didn't explain it very well, but it seemed like a neat concept!
Also, sorry for being a bit noisy in the C&I forum! I just find myself thinking about the game a lot, and about new ideas that might be fun or useful ingame.
