tempered glass bricks

Postby synaris » Sat Apr 28, 2018 2:43 pm

thought just dawned on me while i was digging clay. i want tempered glass bricks to pave and build with. they're not all that weak. we could create a special hot as hell furnace just for making em.

while we're at it, give us some more uses for stained glass. all iv seen is a stained glass heart curio.

Tempered glass is a relatively modern creation. I don't care for this, but would love to see more uses for glass over all.

Stained glass would be neato. Maybe in the future there could be uses for it in custom building?

according to wikipedia all that it takes to temper glass is extraordinarily high heat. which is why i brought up the need for a new furnace.

is it really unfeasible for hearthlings to create a furnace that we could pump air into via bellows or some other device (a bicycle powered fan comes to mind) in order to generate the heat required for the glass?

It's not so much the amount of air pushed through but the fuel source. Coal is terribly inefficient in terms of heat potential when compared to coke (processed coal), natural gas, and electric furnaces.

Yeah, coke would be within the realm of possibility. I was looking it up on Wikipedia, and saw the Chinese had a coking process as early as the 4th century AD.

Good article there on dates on the discovery of tempered glass. I guess what I had read was some of the more modern processes where the glass is super heated and ran through various processes (like Gorilla Glass). Guessing that's what you had seen, too.
