This isnt so much a suggestion as a sounding board/query to the devs as well as actual pvp-lords as to how this system might work in hafen.
Back when I was a wee lad I picked up a game for my gamecube called Baten Kaitos: Origins, an alright JRPG, nothing too extravagant. It's combat system however is very unique and shares similarities with hafen.
to sum it up without getting too deep into the mechanics:
- you start with a deck of 30-60 cards which include attacks, items, and specials.
- you may discard a certain number of cards per turn/cooldown. all cards, played or discarded, are reshuffled into your deck to be used again
- attacks are numbers from 1-6, and combos can be created by playing these cards in order, generally starting with basic [1] attacks, and moving up to [6].
- cards 1-3 generate mana (the IP equivalent), while using cards 4-6 consume mana, ensuring long card combos must be planned.
- items have a card value of [0] and can be played before your attack to modify damage/element/etc.
- Specials included healing cards, revives, mana (IP) boosts, taunts. most everything that doesnt fit into attacks or items.
- Specials are unnumbered and consume a whole turn/cooldown
sure, its not a perfect equivalent, but I enjoy the strategic play baten kaitos creates and thought maybe the devs might be inspired by it.
if you have any Qs about the (brief) video i linked, or how something works just ask.
