Apple Deprecates OpenGL and OpenCL in macOS 10.14 Mojave

Deprecation of OpenGL and OpenCL

Apps built using OpenGL and OpenCL will continue to run in macOS 10.14, but these legacy technologies are deprecated in macOS 10.14. Games and graphics-intensive apps that use OpenGL should now adopt Metal. Similarly, apps that use OpenCL for computational tasks should now adopt Metal and Metal Performance Shaders.

Metal is designed from the ground up to provide the best access to the modern GPUs on iOS, macOS, and tvOS devices. Metal avoids the overhead inherent in legacy technologies and exposes the latest graphics processing functionality. Unified support for graphics and compute in Metal lets your apps efficiently utilize the latest rendering techniques. For information about developing apps and games using Metal, see the developer documentation for Metal, Metal Performance Shaders, and MetalKit. For information about migrating OpenGL code to Metal, see Mixing Metal and OpenGL Rendering in a View.

Things like this raise the question if a client architecture based on an actively supported open source engine might be beneficial, as platform independence issues could be farmed out to the engine developers instead of being an additional burden on the game developers...

To be quite honest, if Apple is going to go the formerly Microsoft way of removing support for open standards in favor for their own proprietary interfaces, then I hope as many developers as possible stay off their stuff. The fact that they aren't even going to be supporting Vulkan is outright malicious.

That being said, it's not exactly obvious from the announcement that they're going to actively remove OpenGL support in the future. It reads more like "hey, you should totally be using our proprietary technology instead" to me. Also there are such things as Molten GL.

No idea what they'll do and as I don't have any apple stuff younger then 25 years (and won't buy any in the future) I'm not affected.

Was just FYI.

Yeah, interesting for sure. It's not the first time I've noticed their pushing Metal quite strongly. It really is quite suspicious.

so sad!

For whom it may concern
Though I guess that it is possible that opengl would not support the hardware that some of their (possibly future) computers use.

Seeing as how it is possible to implement OpenGL with Metal, that seems unlikely.
