What is this again? (QoL suggestion)

I spend a lot of time searching for trees of a specific species and if I can recognize a species on sight ( I usually cant because of my crappy rig ), I have to pick seeds or leaves that I may not want clogging my inventory in order to find out what species the tree is.

I thought of a way to make trees more recognizable once it has been discovered...

Have the species name of each tree that the player has discovered appear above each of those trees.



Then I realized the drain that would be on resources ( can you say Laaaaa Geeeee?) so I refined the idea a bit.

Have the name of the species appear in the right click flower menu, only if the player has previously discovered that species, but in a different color or different font so the player realizes it isnt a clickable option.

If you play using the amber client you can activate a feature that shows you the tree name when you hover while holding shift.

i like the idea, interacting with trees an bushes could have the name show up next time...

i use amber and shift+mouseover to know some bushes... I know most trees by looks, and know a few bushes too, but often I use Amber mouseover, also on terrains and mine tiles...

You can also have them show on the minimap if you're looking for specifics IIRC. Default client really needs something like this as it's a big pain to memorize so many different trees when some are similar enough it can be hard to tell. (And I learned nearly all the herbs in A Tale in the Desert when I was playing it.)

Pop-up names wouldn't really cause any lag. It's minimal processing to add a billboarded text box over an object, and likely only a few bytes of network transmission to pass the information between server and client. (Each tree would have exactly one byte for this field. There are fewer than 128 tree and shrub types, so they could be represented by a numerical value.)

Still, I wouldn't want my screen cluttered with tree names all the time (though it could be an option that could be turned on or off). Right mouse click seems too cumbersome to find it. I would like to know before I even open that menu, which I would then have to close with another click.

Nothing wrong with having it show up if I have a modifier key down when I mouse over much like Amber does it, or having an inspect tool similar to the way you discover qualities on buildings and constructions.

I am aware, but unfortunately, my rig wont run any 3rd party clients.

Thank you both for recognizing that some people do use the default client, and for supporting the idea. It's not so much a pain or inconvenience - although it definitely is both of those as well - as it is a struggle for some people with certain limitations. Take ADHD or other impairments, for example. I'm not saying that is my issue. It could be, but I've never been diagnosed...maybe I'm just a dullard. But, it is very difficult for me to distinguish some trees from other similar trees. At any rate, this tiny QoL adjustment would make a huge improvement to my time efficiency and enjoyment. I can only imagine there are others who also use the default client and would benefit greatly.

Anyway, here's what can be done.
Right now our "flower menu" looks more like "palm tree menu", so if devs could add a center zone to it, it may be something like that:

I was thinking more along the lines of having the second image appear with the first click, but your way would work too. Giving the devs options is never a bad thing. ;)

why not just add the tree name to the information you get from inspecting it?
