Tracking Skill

Most people automatically enable Tracking when they log in. This creates a big problem in the game because people can't have an initial moment of surprise or question where their item has gone.
People are capable of looking at a hole in a wall, and go, hey, someone put a hole in this wall. Maybe it would take the owner a little while to notice. Or if you're missing an item you'll notice you're missing it, if its important. I don't see the reason that people should be able to log in to a screen full or pretty colors that leak both the circumstance of the crime and location of the player.

I think a positive fix for this is turning the Tracking toggle into a skill where the player kneels down, and searches for clues in a 3x3 area. In addition to the immersion, this would prevent randoms from picking up vandalism and small time scents just for fun. It would require prior knowledge of both the incident, and the location of the destroyed property, to reliably search for Scents.

3x3 area will be a bit on the small side, but I guess the usual suspects wouldn't like it even with a massively increased area.

Could be fun though, especially if integrated into PvE (for tracking animals fleeing from combat, in addition to the random blood splatters).

Decent idea, it is arguably silly that seeing scents is passive and not active. Unless you see a crime in an area, how could you possibly know there was one unless you investigate?

nice idea
make search scent area & speed depends on EXPLOR PERC, and tracking will be game process, not just push the button for every one

Good idea!
Lets make crimes even easier than they already are.
You could basically just kill anyone and no one would probably ever find the scents.

I disagree that it would make crimes any easier. It just makes them not as visually apparent to outsiders who were not relevant nor affected by the crime. Shouldnt it be up to the victim to describe the scene to another in order for that person to even be able to determine that a crime took place in the area? The victims themselves can raise awareness to the crime, and even spearhead any potential search. Also I really like that animal tracking idea.

Even with the current system, one who does the crime rarely will be held responsible for it. This would just make the issue even worse.

I don't see how this would make it worse. Right now it's:

"Oh look! crime scents!" player collects scents, starts tracking the perpetrator

A few hours pass"Finally, I have found the culprit, now what should I do to make this dastardly foe pay for his misdeeds?"

30 minutes later"There, I have posted my findings on the forums so nobody every interacts with this obvious Internet troll ever again."

If things get horrible, then maybe someone will take real action. This isn't w3 (or even 6 or 7) where justice actually occurred, even if that justice was just mere revenge or petty spite.

If anything, it would possibly increase the activity of players looking for others to track down criminals... but as long as something can't be done, I don't see that happening, either.

That said, if a change like this can be applied to animal hunting, then I'm all for it, even if the PvP changes might make it slightly harder or less ideal for getting justice (or just exacting revenge).
