More in depth breeding

I think it would be nice if your animals had a small chance to gain certain attributes.
What i mean is:

There is a 0.5% chance that a animal upon being born will have a random attribute, and parents will have a 10% chance per parent to pass on their genes to the next generation(20% if both parents have the gene)
If an animal has more than 1 gene, it will be a 10% chance for the first gene and 10% chance for the second, so about 5% chance to pass both. It's technically possible to have all 4 genes, but even if you achieve this, it would not be easy to pass these genes on.

Of course these are more like fun random things that can happen, hardcore people will only focus on quality though, since this is not at all efficient, but some areas would be helpful, 50% less food for a casual helps alot.

These attributes would be
Precocious: this animal will grow up 50% faster
Hardy: consumes 50% less food
Genetically Predisposed: babies born from this mother will have +50 added to a random stat.
Reproductive: Always has 2 babies when giving birth
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

I can see nice possibilities in that

I think the game in general needs more fun stuff, the falling star thing was a good start.

I'd like there to be several different cow textures that are heritable. Initially they're all transparent, but through selective breeding a particular cow texture could be more visibly apparent with each generation.

I have been playing with it now and then:

However:
  • It still needs more tuning (these were four chosen "good" examples, not any random output from the algorithm);
  • Jorb needs to draw actual variation textures for them; and
  • I'm quite worried about client performance when every animal needs its own texture, so it might need instancable textures implemented in order to work.

As for the suggestion in OP, the idea sounds like it could be fun. There are many things that should arguably be done to cattle, not entirely sure where I think this ranks among them. Another thing that I think that I would like would be the ability to "care" for animals by fulfilling some kind of wishes that they might have. I'd also like riding horses to be slightly less trivial than it currently is, for which I'm considering some kind of "obedience" value on animals, but I'm not at all sure just what that would actually mean.

Not hating this at all!
jorb: I don't want *your* money. You are rude and boring. Go away.
Sevenless: We already know real life has some pretty shitty game mechanics, it's why we're here instead.
Avu: The end is near it has finally come to pass: I agree with Lunarius...
Shubla: There are also other reasons to play this game than to maximize your stat gain.
