Regularly Scheduled Content: By The Numbers

Postby Lunarius_Haberdash » Mon Oct 01, 2018 11:55 am

So every week we get a small patch, with some being significantly larger than others. One thing that has become apparent, however, is that certain additions (hats, furniture, etc) seem to be fairly trivial to add. While we're all chomping at the bit waiting for bigger surprises in our content, there are some of us (more than I suspect some think) who'd be happy to see a regular parade of new furniture and clothing that, while it doesn't add anything NEW it does add alternatives to existing content at similar resource costs.

What kind of alternatives I hear you ask?

Storage alternatives to the rather bland and unexciting cupboard. I'm not asking for additional storage or more secure storage, what I'm asking for is a storage container that in every way functions exactly like the cupboard, but with a different appearance. Consider the following

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/imag ... SeyiHqcS9u
http://mccofl.org/wp-content/uploads/20 ... dunelm.jpg

All of these could function exactly like the cupboard, but give us different decorating alternatives.

More tables, statues, generic structures intended to beautify and decorate our homes and villages. We could also see variations in the wells and other such general structures.

Outside of designing the art I venture to guess it wouldn't take too long for these to be implemented since the intent is to duplicate functionality while providing a broader range of appearances.

I know some feel that the last thing we need is more bloat content, but there's a sizable community that doesn't consider these things more bloat.

Could we, Jorb, perhaps get a dedicated stream of 'new furniture each week' or 'every other week', or even get a cycle of new additions of this sort?

we also need more birds

but seriously, i'd rather see the devs spend their time working on big important updates to fix the game, such as reworking combat system, food system, satiations, siege mechanics, and so on rather than just adding more doo-dads. there is an opportunity cost to time spent adding more furniture and injuries and such

This is where community design would come in handy.

adding new alternative looks for existing furnitures is just a copy- paste with a code in 90% of time so more time u spend on 3D model, texture and animations. Let the devs focus on more hard parts of the code like combat, mechanics and this "walking on objects" feature (like walkning on raft or on the top of the tower)

I really like the idea of having variable object appearances. In an old Sierra game Pharoah, when placing a cosmetic building such as a statue you could press a button to cycle through different types. They all provided the same beautification effect, but for visual sake it was really nice. I definitely like the idea of having a similar thing here for things like cabinets and such.

Also, Jorb specifically asked for more furniture items on a previous stream because this is the sort of thing that can be implemented easily while Loftar fights with the client rewrite.

Can't do any of these big things without loftar, and he's busy with the client rewrite for the forseeable future. Jorb can add furniture on his own without interrupting loftar's work on the rewrite, so I'd say cosmetics aren't lost productivity at this point.

Another idea occurred to me that should be a simple addition that could be updated each week, ala the skeletons.

There are a lot of crafting processes that don't presently have their own sounds and, unless they are purchasing sounds as opposed to using royalty free ones, should be relatively easy to implement as part of a weekly addition.

In short: We need more sounds for crafting, and for as many as possible to have their own unique sounds. Perhaps these could be added to the weekly rotation of minor patches?
