This comes up for about everything that's a food or could feasibly be transported in a barrel. It's a technology issue and the way certain items are treated. Grains, flour, etc are treated as a liquid. It may be possible to provide this treatment to all such goods in the future, but it doesn't appear to be on the development radar any time soon.

Heh, would need to make it so you could shoot them.

Just make it a furniture item you can take the lid off of so you can see them swimming inside.
