+1 Definitely think there should be some very basic protection before leather.
It worked for the natives, and also bone lamellar used by other peoples.

alternatively or in conjunction with, bone armor (CHESTPLATE) and chitin armor (NOT A HAT)

Wooden armour could be made from blocks or boards, or both. It could require rope or hide straps specifically instead of generic string.
