You can, but only using a key ring. Sort of makes sense if you ask me...

Possibly a key ring made out of something else than metal might be a good thing for early game?

Yeah! Make it out of strings and quite limited in number of keys (to compensate for metal-less recipe). Even if it's just one key it still makes sense and could be useful.
