They are scared of smoke, yes?
Burning bonfire should drive those pesky midgets away from the vicinity.

With that logic we could also remove stuff like leeches, wounds and caveins.

They're here to kill swamp bots, and cripple bots in general.
Total misplay.

Leeches have their place in healing wounds and have been used (and are used today) irl medicinally. You can just take them off, anyway. Can't really get midges to fuck off.

Wounds are deterrents towards many behaviors - many are just too punishing and have poor behaviors and heavy debuffs that are destructive to nabs and irrelevant to big fuckers.

Caveins are a resource and effort sink to prevent the entire world from being mined underneath with the way they demand(ed) supports. They were a logical bottleneck and fine content.

Midges are stupid and their sole purpose is to prevent people from leaving their desk within safe confines. They're just annoying, serving no purpose (outside of swamps maybe). They don't offer anything, at all, besides the inability to stand above ground, which as far as I know, didn't need any deterrents. Midges are the prime example as to what I meant when I said that jorb "gets his post ironic warm fuzzies from making things suck and shit and miserable to play." They are dumb, stupid shit, that makes the game a little bit worse. They do have their place in swamps tho.

Then let them stay in swamps. I want to sit in my chair and larp listening to viking music on repeat without a few buggy bois killing me dead.

I hate midges with every fiber of my being, but i want them to stay in the game. I think campfires should ward them away tho.
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

They are attracted to CO2 actually.

Mosquitos (Most biting insects) are attracted by certain odors and molecules released via perspiration and resperation. Substances such as uric acid, lactic acid and ammonia can also be released by bacteria that live in human skin. They can also distinguish C02 sources. So Co2 sourced from a fire will smell different than that of a sweaty meatsack.
To an insect fire generally means I should probably fly somewhere else. in lab settings mosquitos completely avoided going into a chamber containing a sample of freshly burnt wood.

Ive spent a lot of time camping having a camp fire does indeed help with keeping them at bay. Mosquitos can also see 10 μm wavelengths of light so they can see the heat your body gives off. having a fire nearby kinda jams that ability. every thing in the area heats up so it would be hard to tell where you are exactly. Fires also interfere with the local air currents the heated gasses rise causing a lower airpressure drawing in more air.

I like the idea of burning cat-tail heads as a portable repellent for these fiends and have campfires of braziers provide a larger area of repellent
It rubs the lotion on its skin and does as its told. it does this whenever its told or else it gets the hose again. Now it puts the lotion in the basket. PUT THE FUCKING LOTION IN THE BASKET!

Don't assume yourself unique in that. :)

Really depends on a lot of factors (wind quite often being much more of a factor than fire). There are areas where it's bad enough so you have to be so close to the fire that it's borderline uncomfortable but your back is just covered in mosquitos.

In other words - yes, it sort of helps. But it doesn't make them go away.
