Update Schedules Weekly=Good?

Postby burnemall » Tue Feb 12, 2019 12:29 pm

For as long as I'm following the development, I was always asking myself if a weekly update schedule is really a good thing for the game.

Don't get me wrong, I love updates as much as everyone else, but I'm asking myself if this is the most efficient way of developing the game. Keep in mind that with every update, time has to be put into launching / monitoring / commenting / writing announcements etc.

So my point is: Wouldn't it be better for the game if the updates would come in, I don't know, every 4 weeks? Wouldn't that help with tackling bigger issues / features? Or does the game need these quick iteration cycles, lest the whole thing blows up due to a oversight?

Considering most updates are minor and use different sets of dev resources (game design/art vs more backend coding for the big longterm updates) I think weekly is fine.

Bigger issues usually require a world reset.

Weekly updates are mostly new critters and minor reworks and bugfixes, which are always welcome

There is no schedule:

It just happens that they roll out updates sort of weekly (but not really) lately.

Just like when i played Rust: Waiting 30 days to be absolutely disappointed is much worse than waiting approximately 7 days with the chance for something good to happen.

If it involves the map data it's almost certain to need a world reset.

not true loftar stated that expanding the map is a trivial affair. can be one at anytime when needed.

If world 10 taught us anything is that some major changes can be done without world resets

I think it's good if we try to maintain a presence and underscore that we're actively developing the game. That being said we have some big ticket items in the pipe that I'd like us to eventually attack, which may require more time.

Though I'm not 100%. Forcing patches every week will lead to some weak ones.

Funny that you bring up Rust, the developers had a poll about the update schedule, they told their players that it is terribly inefficient to constantly update. The poll - of course - ended with almost all of the players wanting faster updates, ugh.

weak or not I feel like having weekly content is a good thing. its something to look forward to even if it just a hat and some small content additions / bugfixes.

I can see that, sure, but I would always trade 4 hats, one obsucre bird and three sausages (no offense Jorb) for a meaningful addition.
