Is there a specific fish you're having problems with, or is this a general issue you're encountering?

In my experience, it depends heavily on location/fish type. Some of them will just kill a specific lure almost every time.

a general issue i guess, i don't really know, I thought the point of the casting rod was to not need to carry a backpack full of shit to be able to fish, i only tried for about 20 minutes last night and lost over 20 lures, just rock lobster and woodfish mostly because I only took one feather fly, one rock lobster, and one woodfish when I went out, made the rest in the field, i'll try it some more in some different spots today but my first impression is not good

Yeah, the thing with the casting rod is it doesn't require a ton of stuff, but you have to do a shitload of testing for Q/% nodes, and what fish like what lures/lines/hooks before you get there. When you're testing it's awful and you need to carry a heap of stuff in your inventory. When I'm testing lure fishing nodes, I always run with 2 of each hook, 2 of each string, 2 of each lure I can easily produce, in a small chest.

Once you have your area kinda mapped out, and your tackle combos figured out, you can do things like "convert 3 blocks and 6 chicken feathers into a cupboard full of eels".

Anecdotal, but woodfish and rock lobster seem to have an above average number of fish that hate them and break them commonly.

It's not anecdotal if you're keeping records. it may not be highly accurate, but it's still helpful and contributes to a larger picture in an informative way.

If we could understand the node system, we might make heads or tails of the underlying math, but as is... we're just floundering in the boat.

All lures I tested last world had at least one fish that, when targeted, always eats the lure - and some others that settle on high chances. For each fish there was a combination that gave reliable catch without excessive lure loss.

At some locations the fish are hard to catch and the lure will break quite often, move to another spot. I suspect bait plays a role in it too.
