Ability to describe location

Postby SaltyCrate » Sun Mar 03, 2019 12:20 am

I would like to have the ability to describe my map markers to another person or onto the pergament. The way it could work is similar to kin list: you would right-click on the marker name in the list and select "Describe to" option. Then you can describe it to either another person or onto the pergament, same as kins. If other person have visited the minimap where this marker is located then it would automatically be added to his list with the same name. If he haven't visited the minimap then the procedure could fail, because from what I understand about how markers and map are stored there could be technical issues there. But if it would be possible to describe any marker to anyone than it would be a plus. I would be satisfied if it would only work for custom markers, but if it would work for any type of markers then that is even better.
Also I realize that it potentially could all be done through some external means, even automatically. Which I guess could be the reason to not bother with it and handwave it to custom client developers. Still, I somehow feel that it would be right to have in-game means to do so.

Maps are stored locally. You can copy paste your map to someone else with some finagling, although when I did that I had some minor tile corruption (blank spots on the map that give me errors in chat until the map fills them in). Might take some elbow grease to get it to work because of that, but not sure how much

I kind of like the idea of the location showing up as a "?" on the player's map or some such to keep with a general exploration theme.

I know that. But as far as I know you can't easily copy your own markers to someone without overriding theirs. Sure, one could write a tool to parse markers storage file and do the merge, but I don't have neither this tool nor ability to make one.

It still have a lot of unmapped spaces. It doesn't have underground levels. There isn't any guarantee that it will be available forever. It isn't easy or convenient in case of sharing more than one location with more than one person.

All the counterpoints still stand plus the additional one: it is made by Shubla, which is awful in all sorts of ways.

I'm going to halt the derail right here. If you have issues with shubla and his tools, take it up in that thread.

Good idea, 100% needs to be implemented eventually. It is easy and has all kinds of fun implications, like scavenger hunts or treasure maps.

This is a really poor excuse. Not only are you saying that because it is already possible to do using external tools, it shouldn't be present in the actual game. You are also arguing that because we have a kinda shitty system, there is no need to improve it.

This software called Lighshot is really good for sharing locations. You take a screenshot and it lets you draw if you need to, then uploads it and gives you a link to share.
