I have been in some situation like this:
1. Sleep in harsh hearth dirts.
2. Decide I will stand it no longer.
3. Erect mighty stone building to defense from the elements.
4. Live here for a time and enjoy my shelter.
5. Try to walk through, but stumble and fall.
6. Too many item is piling up in the floor.
7. Construct container to organize these items.
8. Many items need many containers.
9. Pack them in tightly to use well my space.
10. :placegrid 1024
Placing objects close together I think is more difficult than it need to be. You must have very steady hand with high values of placegrid, or you must deal with wasted space. Maybe you can get lucky and for low values of placegrid, these objects can tile nicely. Though to even use this strategy you must know proper value per size of object and manually adjust it for each time. Also, due to how these snap points work, aligning mixed size items is still painful with this method. Additionally, I think probably needing to use some console command for normal gameplay is not ideal user experience. For some item like trellis, wasting this space is very relevant. In some case, the tediousness of this placing can be maddening to me.
I think instead of only snap to points on floor grid, there should be option to enable object to snap to other nearby object when placing. Using this, it will be very easy to align objects and pack them in as tightly as possible.
