More texture change!

Is there a specific reason why there is a lot of items that still don't change aspect based on the materials used in it?

I'm talking about items like many containers (cupboards, barrels, crates, coffers, stone casket, large chest, mannequin, wooden chest, wooden box), some production&processing items (bee skep, herbalist table, tubs), some workstations (anvil, churn, meat grinder) and most furnaces (oven, smelter, crucible, finery forge, tar kiln), and walls (dry stone walls, brick walls, palisades). Probably there are some items I forgot to mention.

There are two reasons to add material-based texture to items. The first and most obvious is aesthetic: it looks nice to have things of different colours, based on what you used to build them.

The second reason, and most important, is color coding.
Gates of different color could be associated to different keys, making it much easier to know which key you need for each gate.
Barrels of different color could be designed for different seeds or liquids. Cupboards and chests with a specific design could tell villager that those are only for a specific kind of items, like let's say Cherry red for first aid supplies.

This could also work for items with quality, even if less likely, like tubs.

We already have such a feature on many items of many different materials, both quality workstations and random stuff like wilderness beacons. Could we please get it on more stuff?

Yes. it's a work in progress. From reading and hearing comments from jorb, some objects will never have material specific textures, walls particularly, though you do make a good argement for gates, at least.

The majority of the development time has been spent on trying to optimize the client over the last year or so. it's not an easy job, even for a team of programmers.

Thank you.
I thought that might be the case about walls. No rainbow palisade I guess :(

It's good to hear that "lack of time" is the main reason for it, and not "lack of will". I hope we'll see it at least on cupboards/barrels and gates soon, it would make life so much easier.

You brought up an issue I was also wondering about. It's great to be able to answer that.
