Don't see why when you can just put it on your toolbelt and have better things on your back.

If you can't find space on your belt for a shield you're using too small of a belt.

I could see this reasonable for larger, more defensive shields that take up more inventory space.

Belt slots are per item, inventory size doesn't matter.
