Animal Happiness

Animals should have a happiness meter akin to what we had in the days of legacy for normal players.
They should become sad when you leave dead animals near them or kill their friends. Even having a small pen should make them sad, especially if it's overcrowded.
They should perhaps become suicidal if they see their owner killed, unless of course they were already sad in which case they might be happy the bad owner is dead, until of course they realize they are trapped forever without food now.

The happiness meter could contribute to the quality of products you get from them to some degree with sad being weight more. It could also determine their willingness to breed, eat, and otherwise desire to continue their life in their cage.

If we changed it so that instead of needing 10 factory farmed cow into 1 happy cow it could be a tolerable mechanic to add. But animals would need to output a lot more product for this to not feel horrible. Maybe make it a boost with baseline product being equivalent to now? So factory farms are still just as viable, but happy cow larpers can get bonuses? The quality bonus is a dangerous addition though, because it forces the system onto minmaxers which means the system's implementation becomes very crucial as opposed to something "optional".

Sounds like a system that could be a pain or interesting depending how it's implemented.

As someone who does everything the "right" way I find it unnecessary.

Unless You wanna make animals another chore when someone has less time to manage and their pens start growing tight. That would be unfair for them since any action taken, without extra effort, would leave them punished.

Idk, I get what everyone else is saying but I kinda agree with boshaw tbh, I hate seeing those tiny pens jam-packed with livestock and even worse the ones Nik built in my underground levels last world where the animal was trapped between a gate and a hf and couldn't even move, then he didn't bother to feed them and they all died ... :(

I know they aren't real, lol, but even so ... there should be some consequences for cruelty to animals even in a game I think. :)

Too small pens make it hard to manage the animals that is punishment enough. Fuck the cows I play to make myself happy not to make them happy.
