Voting experiment

Postby shubla » Thu Apr 11, 2019 10:59 pm

I think that it would be interesting idea for devs to create a poll on things that they should do next, as an experiment.
Devs would choose some small subset of suitable ideas from C&I or from their lists, and players could vote one idea out of those.
Voting would be only allowed for verified or subscribed accounts to prevent abuse of it.

Maybe it could be a monthly thing if it works? Like community can vote for 1 thing from some list to be implemented that they really want.

Or then devs hate the idea that community would decide anything, and want to implement all ideas in their arbitrarily decided order!

I could well live with Pay2Develop: Voting should be done through subtokens which are removed from the account the moment the vote is cast, the ones voted on the option not selected are returned to the respective accounts.

That's a very eloquent way to phrase "pay to win".

Thanks, but no, thanks.

I thought that the idea would be more if like giving the community to chance to decide, instead of just collect more money from the players.

I like this idea. The Devs get to choose the poll, people who pay for the game help steer it. My only point is that 10$ may be too much money for poor peeps. Maybe every 3-4 polls verified users get a free vote.

I trust the devs enough that I would pay to vote

Imagine if there were a well-organised group of people. A group of people with a very specific view on gameplay and morally ambiguous goals they set for themselves while playing this game. Imagine there's a vote on "should we make palisades basheable, remove the non-rage characters trait and allow players to wield two B-12 simultaneously". This group of people pools up and pays for enough subtokens to push this vote through. What happened? They made the game more to their liking, yes. In fact, they've paid a non-negligible amount of money to do so. But will this change be beneficial for all the players? I am strongly inclined to believe it will not.

Ofcourse these are just hyperbolised and very theoretical musings. There are no well-organised groups of people in this game whose main goal is to Dominate all the other players in every way imaginable, and if there were, they surely wouldn't put their own interests before the wellbeing of the whole community while voting via paid subtokens on important matters.

I Smell OSRS. Being said, they have a very unique take on adding content to the game. Perhaps it hasn't worked perfectly for either the community or the developers, but it's a great token of goodwill to at least run some of the more mechanically controversial changes past the userbase before wasting developer time on it. Considering the age of OSRS and the size of the community, i'd say it's had a positive influence on the game, even with its flaws.

given all that, it wouldn't work in haven as a tool to choose content. Perhaps it could be used as a gauge of interest by jorb (for instance, if it were polled in-game), but certainly not as a "all votes final" type of deal. Especially considering Jorb's predisposition towards The Divine Right of Kings

Better hide them poll results though.

None of the posts above are the same as my idea.
To make it clear:
Idea is that devs pre-select some ideas that they could implement.
But because there probably are quite many of those ideas, implementing them all will take a lot of time.
Players could vote one of these ideas to be made sooner than the others.

There would not be polls about major mechanic-related questions, like palibashing.
But more like "will we implement a bird, more colors for sketches, a new boat or a new crop" or something.
