Above the minimap there is a "Map" button.
You can resize that window to use the full screen, and unzoom to level 1.
It's not a whole world map, but you get a pretty decent chunk of it.

I'm not sure if you're talking of some specific custom-client feature or some wholly different kind of zoom, but the default client's map window has had zoom support for almost two years.

The file size grows with square of your map dimensions (roughly). At some point this size becomes insane. There is a reason mapping tools use tiles and zoomed tiles.

Are you saying it refuses to zoom out further than that? I can't remember there being a maximum zoom level in the map window.
