So here's my next "Very unpopular idea" inspired by a post about annual changing animal node qualities.
I think the crop nodes should do this, and that crops planted above the local quality should slowly decay down towards your local quality.
Every year the local quality for a crop should cycle, so that we'd have good and bad years for crops.
The way I see this working is this (once farming is established)
In Spring, you plant a round of your best Q seeds (presuming they're at or above your local quality). When they pop, if they increase in quality, you'll know that this year's local quality is higher than before so you start planting in earnest. If they go down, you default to growing a batch of your second-best quality seed to keep production going without killing your crop Q.
At the end of any given year, you fill barrels with seeds of your best quality crops for replanting the following year. When Spring hits again, you put your crops in the ground to perform the test once more.
This would serve to make farming a more engaging process with random pleasant surprises and occasional deep disappointments. Given that more than one node could exist for any given crop in any given property, with larger villages having more possibility for more nodes, this means every year you have to find your best field for any given crop. Some years you'll have to trade for your best crop, some years you'll be the one doing the selling.
In combination with this I would see the seasons extended beyond a week, preferably 2 weeks each.
