Study books

Postby iamgrzes » Sun Mar 08, 2020 2:34 pm

Hi, I would like to be an mater chief and only focus on cooking. But to get recipes I have to pickup the ingredients first. It's a daunting task and forces to pump up the explorer and perception to find them. What if the cook is lazy or scared about the wild life out there?
To solve this issue I have an idea. How about introducing study books. This could be also expanded to other professions. Let's take an example:
Experienced explorer can craft a book with a foraging item what is capped with explorer and intelligence, the materials used for the book will also determine the quality of the book.
So we have a book. Now we can use the study the book, but instead of gaining LP it will require LP's (better quality less LP used?) and the quality could have also impact on the success of learning the stuff. By learning the stuff i mean the same effect the player would pick up it from the world.
Other example is carpenter could write the book about crafting a rope walk so instead of the explorer ability for capping it would use carpentry skill.
Also for learning a book player has to have the right skills. What do you think about this?

If a player who has discovered an item picks it up with left click, and right clicks on your character they will get an option to teach you the ingredient. Works for liquids in containers as well. That way you can share discoveries, but the taught character doesn't get the LP from it.

There's already a system for you, but it's not exactly obvious. Not surprising people don't know about it.

This. There are also "material accounts" where you can take an item and "teach" it to a parchment so another player can use the parchment to learn the item, also without any LP.

This isn't a novel idea and has come up at least a few times over the last couple of worlds because all those material accounts can be very cumbersome to make and store for new characters. You can take up at least a few cabinets with all the different items there are in the game if you don't care about getting any of the discovery LP.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

This mechanic is already in the game in the form of material accounts. Arguably, it should perhaps be possible to bind several material accounts into a book.

They will never be available on the first day of a new world, for natural reasons.

While the OP's suggestion already exists mechanically, +1 for binding several pages (of any kind) into a book
