Leeches were historically used for healing purposes (and some things they probably did indeed successfully heal)
But midges not.

Not all things in the game have to be beneficial. You should visit some Finnish forest during warm, non-windy summer evening and you will realize.
I think they do not spawn in game during autumn/winter(maybe not during spring?)
