You ever been in snow? It builds up over time and collects in lower areas or areas not over a certain degree of steepness. This (and rain) is why roofs are required by law to be at least a certain degree depending on where you live. Otherwise your roof collapses in.
It constantly builds up until the temperature gets over a certain temperature and begins to melt. (In this case, the end of the season)
It's not just a thin layer that gets on things and changes the color. In real life we can get 5+ feet of snow and so forth.
Some places should get more snow than others too
