Weapons should break in combat

Seriously, it seems much more likely that a weapon would break than your armor. Realism please

But a properly crafted sword is hard to break. Unless You literally go and break it on purpouse or have very unlucky day (or just shitty sword) or your enemy used an armor (probably not) or weapon (probably yes) designated to literally break it. Swords can become dull but still it doesn't make them freaking sticks.

Swords could definitely get blunt, then one would have to sharpen them.
I don't think that devs would really oppose adding some kind of wear to weapons as well, to add some more metal sinks.

Honestly, tools in general should suffer some sort of wear.
