Add a third possible gilding item to questing rewards, to gild into rings. Probably less common than the other two.

IMO gilding rocks/leaves should be able to go into rings

I feel like having it be a distinct, less common, third type would make it more "special" or exciting to create/loot a nice ring in the pre-good-gem stages of the game. It'd probably have to be weighted to be better on average than a leaf/rock to compensate for rarity/restriction to jewelry.

I think I'd just be more pissed off than happy if I got a good gilding item that was locked to rings when I already have a good set of rings

That's a fair point, though I'd argue that a character's personal inability to use a reward like that doesn't necessarily diminish its value that much unless you're playing solo. Still would work for trade, can always use it to equip a villager/alt, etc.
