Make it so that hearth fires will have additional space inventory for curios if player doesn't have his own study desk. This inventory should be smaller that study desk. This curio inventories should be accessible by other players, just like study desks.
This will help new players to discover this feature easier, and also will help on start, so you will not need to make chicken genocide in first days of world.
Also, craft cost of study desks can be increased if there will be alternatives.
Study desks are not mandatory at all, they were only ever added to subvert the unfair advantage that auto-study clients were giving some players. When you first start the game and are too poor or simply don't know enough to collect bones and make glue, you probably don't have enough exp to be running a full desk full of shit curios anyways.
If anything I would say that having a small blurb about the importance of a study desk in the new tutorial section should be enough.
Any other player in the know will be able to get a desk on day 1 or 2 or be spawning in an alt in a village with one waiting for them.
