i think legally if i tame, say, a horse or a sheep there should be a dedicated pet button.

Animals should have a happiness stat that increases if they are petted every day, and there should be fun heart animation particles around their head when they get pets.

The happiness doesn't even have to effect any other part of the domestication process or the other stats, but it is required.
