More open development

Postby shubla » Sun Oct 04, 2020 9:00 pm

I think that devs should install multiple webcams and microphones constantly streaming to their apartments so we could follow the development of the game more closely.

Just telling in the forums about update being 1 week late again is not enough.

Yes, but the chat should be muted. People coming up with and spaming their trash ideas creating noise in jorb's head.
Devs should never take advice or ideas from other people on how to create their OWN game, they should keep their craft to their own vision and creativity just like it was in legacy haven. The money aspect has fogged their creative minds and is forcing them to implement trash and taking away their motivation to work on their game. The game is ruined by other people's trash ideas already. Let this forums be here so people can continue posting their trash ideas, but devs should add blockers on their browsers incase they click on this forums section accidentaly. Strip all the content out of the game that doesn't align with the initial vision of haven.

Won't cost them nothing but their privacy, I can send them some old CCTV cameras and microphones.

I'm just spitballing here, maybe devs could push out bigger updates less frequently, but make weekly dev diaries about what they're working on?

Example: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/th ... r.1426255/
Haven and Hearth Wiki (Maintained by volunteers - test/verify when practical. Forum thread

Basic Claim Safety (And what you’re doing wrong
TL:;DR: Build a Palisade with only Visitor gates.)

Combat Guide (Overview, PVE, PVP) (Includes how to escape/minimize risk of getting killed.)

I think dumping this stagnant old shitty forum would be a move in a positive, more open and productive direction.

A subreddit or an official discord is really more appropriate for the type of banter that goes on here and a dev can pop a bullet point in a stickied weekly or monthly thread with a screencap or a brief update about how good or bad progress is coming along. This is an incredibly popular way to run a game community these days. I am in many subreddits and discords where dev interaction happens this way. It allows a dev engage the community, be it for just a second or an hour, at any time and is an appropriate platform to simply make a quick comment, give a little teaser or post a full on update.

The number of users who play this game who don't actively use discord or reddit is probably negligible or literally nonexistant, yet the vast, vast majority of the population doesn't even bother to check in here on the supposed "update day" of the week anymore unless somebody posts a link in discord.

Isn't that quite the same as the current forum, but worse, as there are no categories for topics?
Zentetsuken wrote:official discord

Same problem, no categories for topics, discussion is too fast paced so it would consume even more devs time to follow. Forums where people have to think a bit more carefully what they say are way more efficient method for communication.

Both discord and reddit also have next to no search functionality, which is quite important to keep track of previous discussions about things etc.

I think that discord is a platform for brainless spamming and suitable for low attention span of most people on the internet these days.
Sometimes on discord I talk about thing that was being talked about 5 minutes ago and people are wondering what the heck I am talking about. Way too fast paced, brainless and meaningless discussion, as i said.

Reason why many games have discord is not that discord would be good platform. But companies trying to adapt "hey fellow kids!!"-mentality. Companies hire some social media experts which say that discord is solution to all problems, but in the end the quality of discussion stays low and amongst only few members, even if the server has many people in it.

many dev/game community subreddits categorize specific topics with stickies and permissions, like a dev-only post that stays at the top for example. Another way they do it is post tagging, which makes finding topics actually way fucking easier than searching on this forum tbh. I've also seen things such as scheduled posting which is pretty fun. For example, tuesdays = suggestions and feedback day.

as for discords, channels = categories, this is a no brainer and you have seen how it works in discord, it's easy to search and can be more heavily organized if needed

I don't think 90% of the subforums on this forum are even necessary anymore, categorization and organization is almost meaningless. What categories do we even need? Bug reports, ideas, announcements, trade, general? This ofcourse is assuming we keep kidding ourselves that bug reports and ideas are even actually monitored by the devs anymore outside of DMs.

If you haven't seen a nicely organized subreddit or discord for a gaming community for an even bigger game with 1000s more players and oodles of more content that could easily facilitate this community, you are either living under a rock or you are a stale old boomer

Have you even looked at the search functionalities of the forum? There are way more ways to filter search results than with reddit.
Search features of discord are so bad that there is no need to have further discussion about them.

Even if you had category in discord for each subforum, there still wouldn't be topics. So simultaneous discussion of stuff would be rather difficult.
With discord there are also 0 possibilities for people from different time zones to discuss, because the messages get immediately buried, especially in large servers. Maybe you could tag each message according to the topic of the thing being discussed. or wait, wouldn't it be just easier to use forum in that case? yeah.

I am part in a few large probably "well maintained" discord servers, but they all have the problems that I have mentioned earlier.

Discord discussions are short lived and inconclusive. In forums, high quality discussion with well carefully thought messages can happen.

If the current HnH discord server would be more rigorously moderated, there would be no discussion because most people who post in there would be banned.
