I think that when your animals get hungry and no trough is available, they should start eating crops off your field if they can!
Also from stockpiles containing carrots etc. edible stuff.

Possibly even from containers if they contain fodder, but maybe not.

Depends! Do you find taking five minutes to run across a typical size base fun? The cows were in such numbers they lagged the server. After the culling things returned to normal.

Anyway, cows shouldn't eat. Upkeep mechanics are shit. The #1 reason this game is exhausting is because you have to spend 4 fucking hours farming and managing a horde of animals.

Good solution could be just to make their ql always increase +3 or something. So you could keep managed populations without having to quit the game out of exhaustion.

Wild Cows should be able to eat over the walls.

If the food is in caves, the boreworms should be able to steal the food there and the smells of food should attract trolls.

The game is promoting Gluttony, reduce the foods that are available to hearthlings.
