Dogs

Yes, I know that it has been mentioned before. But how could dogs improve the hearth lands?

A dog can herd animals. Instead of carrying eight ropes you can assign the dog to herd them. Make it max ten sheep, eight goats OR five cows per dog. The dog will follow its owner. Number of animals it can herd will be dependent on its training score.

Dogs are faithful. You can't reassign them to a new owner.

A dog is a sentry. If someone with active trespass crime comes within range of the dog it barks. If someone with any active criminal scents more serious than trespass is within range of the dog it growls.

A dog is a guardian. If someone trespasses within two stacked claims (eg. village and personal) the dog will attack them.

A dog is helpful when hunting. The dog will take pointer stance in the direction of birds, and hackles stance in the direction of large game. Training score matters here too. Dogs are really good at finding wounded game, or dead animals. They can also track a runaway horse.

A dog is a flaming pain in the neck. If the dog sights rabbits it will chase them. And while sometimes it can catch a rabbit or squirrel and bring it back, face it, you are more likely to see the dog disappear off your mini-map and come home hungry. Percentage chance to keep it from running out of sight by using the action whistle. Intact male dogs are even more likely to take off when they sight a bitch in heat. Your prize breeding male will happily disappear for three hours or three days when someone else goes by on the opposite side of the river with a bitch in heat, and your neighbour may end up with some higher q puppies than they deserve. The higher the training score the less problems with truancy.

A dog has a good sense of direction. A lost dog will eat rabbits and squirrels and do fine for two weeks or so, should it not pathfind its way back to the pali gate of its owner's claim during that time.

A dog is a real flaming total pain in the neck. A dog will eat random foragables that it finds, or potentially maul any dead game that happens to be lying around waiting for you to butcher it. Dogs need to be fed.

A dog can be good for your physical and mental health. You can send the dog to bed, in a player bed and then if you log out into the same bed beside the dog it slightly reduces the severity of damage that occurs while logged out. (eg. adder bites, infected sores, seal finger etc.)

Dogs can be over bred. That first one you tamed from out of a pack of wolves is a fierce killer and fighter, but face it, can only be slightly trained. Her great-great-grand puppy can be trained but that killing and fighting ability has been eroding at the same time. Of course the dog that you tamed from a fox was pretty wimpy to begin with but when you over breed those you end up with well trained terriers that can't even handle herding very well.

Dogs suck eggs. You want your dogs to be nowhere near your chicken coops because eggs will vanish over night. Feral chickens will make the dog take off in a happy blood lust frenzy that makes the fox look envious.

Dogs like to howl: During full moons the dog will howl if there are any foxes, wolves or other dogs around.

Wolves don't like dogs. A howling dog will attract any wolf pack within range, better keep that pup inside the pali so he doesn't get torn to bits. A bitch in heat, however might have a chance...

Dogs like boats. They would be the only livestock that can go in a boat without having to be in your inventory. You have to whistle to get them on or off the boat.

Dogs can swim. Nothing could be more amusing than to watch your dog take off after a rabbit on the other side of the goddamn river... Or see them jump out of your boat to chase one. Yeah, maybe we also need accessories, collar (1 leather) spiked collar ( 1 leather, 1 nugget), leash (regular rope but can only be attached to the collar of the dog.)

Edited to correct the word And to Or in this sentence: Instead of carrying eight ropes you can assign the dog to herd them. Make it max ten sheep, eight goats and five cows per dog.
