Made of wool, leather and turtle shell.

This. There's a good chance you'll hit at least 1 cave-in before you get enough metal for a support, and a good chance of that cave-in hurting you.
The helmet shouldn't be easy to make, it should be a goal you'd need to strive for to get that bit of security. Otherwise, +1
