What are chances of player managing to kill a deer before starting mining?
If somebody manages to kill a deer he already knows enough about the game to know about mining, there are cave entrances everywhere anyway so it should be obvious.
The every world occurring upgrade from stone axe to pickaxe is very satisfying and good event which should not be gotten rid of.
Yes they were used to mine flint, but this is also a video game. There can be even be reason to have flint be a superior rock for stone axes compared to most other rocks.
Most people begin hunting before even attempting mining. You're not going to get the necessary strength needed for the retarded stone axe mining from nuts alone, hence the outcry from the initial removing of strength from bear capes when they reworked gear. When to start mining is not obvious, if you attempt to start whacking at that early stage you'll either get a "It's to hard to mine", or if you can it'll take far to long, discouraging the newbie. A basic earlier version of the pick would be a big indicator and helpful tool to start.
Mining is not very satisfying, getting an upgrade is, but the actual act of mining (with a stone axe of all things) is painful and dumb. Your logic suggests to remove wooden shovels to.
