Loftar's home servers

Postby shubla » Wed Mar 17, 2021 2:39 pm

Apparently his ISP is having some problems right now.
HnH NS are hosted at loftars home, it seems. Thus most people are unable to connect to forums or the game right now. (Except if they have written the IP down like I have)

I ask: is it reasonable that a game played and loved daily by many is dependent on loftars home internet connection?
I think that its time to move the nameservers to some proper hosting company which provides some uptime guarantees, as consumer ISP/electricity is for sure not as reliable, as we have seen.

Why would someone host nameservers on his private computer, for a public server?

For fun and "more control" of course? Why should one use some proprietary server anyway.

Maybe I'm missing something, but you still need to register a domain and have public DNS pointing to your own if other people are to find it?
Maybe you meant login server?

I admit my knowledge of this kind of stuff is limited, and what I read here is against of what I know. Would appreciate if someone could explain it to me

Reason why some people may still connect is that windows for example has 24 hour cache for dns records. Some dns servers may have longer cache times also. Or maybe the server very occasionally comes in for some moments, I don't know.

Well obviously the .com root servers must point to loftars server and loftar must pay the registration fee for it.
But loftars server will point you to the actual server which the forum game etc. are running on, and that server pointing other servers has some internet issues at the moment.

How would this improve things for Loftar? Is there any possibility that it would result in fees needing to be paid or other inconveniences to him?

Well, he already has servers rented. Even renting a new cloud from hetzner is very cheap. But there is no need to do that, even, many if not all domain registrars provide their nameservers for free to be used with the domain, which could be used for HnH too. But as I said before, maybe loftar has some reason (other than general interest) to host his own. But this is the cost that we all pay for that.

Indeed it is not! I'm actually not even sure why it is, I'm already running DNS slave servers on not one but two different physical servers at Hetzner, and I was sure I was already using them to run the domain, so indeed it should be running off of them instead of the authoritative server (which is indeed my home server). I suspect I may have redirected it at some previous point due to some DNS setup that was meant to be temporary during some transition or something and just forgot to point it back. I will certainly do so.

And on that note, of course my home server would decide to just randomly hang in hardware on the fairly rare occasion that I'm away for just a few days.

That is why one runs on redundant hardware with a resilient filesystem (that does not hang on unclean shutdown) and with access to a means to power-cycle the machine remotely, no?
