Self-Claimed Fishing Nets

Postby Lunarius_Haberdash » Sun Mar 28, 2021 5:05 pm

Fishing nets should come with their own 24-72 (RL) hour claim when placed, but should also function like survey flags where only a certain amount can be placed per account. This would help improve the accessibility of the deep sea for using nets while also limiting the number of utility claims thrown down to protect nets.

This would be an important change to make between worlds. After the aforementioned time, the net can be pulled up by anyone.

You should be allowed to drop down unlimited amount of nets, but only latest five will be considered "owned."

Or would that be un-intuitive?

Only if there's no notification. For some like this I think a ping "you have x nets left" would do the trick.

+1 fuck random fishing claims

If this gets added, the "owned" nets MUST have some sort of visual indicator.

Why in the world would they make this a thing?

There are plenty of reasons to make a claim extend in to water;
boat parking, docks, lobster traps, manual fishing areas, clay spots

What exactly makes fishing nets deserve their own special attention?
It's suppose to be a passive way to get fish when an entire manual fishing mechanic already exists, I think having to rely on regular claims or gamble on not claiming at all is a pretty fair trade off for not spending hours manually fishing tbh.

I don't like this idea because I'd have to steal from them in order to take advantage of free fish.

Good idea let's copy this on all of those  Seriously, ditto this idea for lobster traps.

Docks take siege to destroy, why do they get special attention? They're more important and cost more, but nets need far less protection than a dock gets, and rightfully so.

Also the fishing mechanic sucks, you shouldn't have to spend hours to manually fish. The trade off is not being able to go for a specific fish. I don't know any non-casuals that fish late world. There's an economic concept at play here, I can't remember its name. Essentially manual fishing is so goddamn awful we've unfairly put more value on net fishing.

Ultimately though this would be a minor change. A matter of annoying claims on shores vs ability to raid unclaimed nets. Maybe compromise by making it so you could "check" a net without pulling up, getting the fish and leaving a tresspass scent if its not yours, or actually pulling up the net, which would be theft?

Considering deep sea fishing can't claim anything, and couldn't possibly get interesting mechanics as a result, I support this concept.

absulutely, random claims around the world are an cancer, and basically having too own one to not get your entire nets transported of by passing gypsies was an huge part why i didn´t make more nets,

+1 This is a change that would have almost no negatives in terms of intended gameplay, reduces small random claims on the edges of water, encourages individuals who don't want to put effort into gathering a resource themselves to commit crimes, and allows deep sea nets to be claimed.
