Chickens don't do particularly well without feathers. If they don't die of shock then it can take months to regrow them fully, if they even come back that well at all. And if its not a bird we are raising, why would you want to pluck it and release it anyways?

Suppose that raiding magpie nests and getting the occasional feather that way would suit that attitude more.

You could argue that some chicken feathers could appear as "trash" in a chicken coop, but I think people would probably go ape if that lowered the number of chickens you could put in a coop.

Isn't 9 the most you can put in one to maximize egg production per bird? Or is it 10? it doesn't leave room for the chicks to grow up (need a second coop after they hatch), but leaves plenty of room for extra feathers.

That's not a bad idea, but I'd rather just butcher a few chickens a day to get those bones, too, and turn the meat into fat.
