Lanterns repel midges

Postby overtyped » Sat May 08, 2021 10:09 pm

Currently, nobody but rpers would ever use one, so allow equipped lanterns to repel midges.
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

Lanterns are great for lighting stuff, last 3 days and basically only cost meat to refuel. I'd imagine they'd attract midges if anything, but that'd suck

this would work, too. Build lanterns/torches/whatever strategically around the swamp leaving some room to forage without them bothering you.

Really I think that given how horendously bad for the general welfare of hearthlings midges are, they should have developed insect repellant by now regardless of how out of context with the period of the game (whatever that is, which I am not entirely sure) it is, or just exterminated them all such as was done to mosquitos in Panama.

I messaged jorb about this before but even Neolithic cavemen could come up with some method of repelling biting insects while they sat around banging rocks together all day

Citronella is setting appropriate and you should be able to make it into a grease salve that can be applied that deters all midges for a set period of time.

reviving this thread and other ideas for "repel" there should be a whole pest control type skill branch could even effect farming, gardening, storing food? This could add on some many systems and fix some annoying things like midges

I often thought alchemy skill could include an insect repellent. A jar would contain several "doses", with each lasting a couple of hours (an offset to this would be it repels all insects, so catching a beetle or grasshopper would be more difficult).

In a similar vein, an open fire should keep animals at bay, so build a campfire if you're working out in the wild and stay within a certain radius of it and not have to worry about those roaming bears and adders and lynx.

Lanterns... attract midges? Will consider!

(Would be cute if they attracted bugs generally, wouldn't it? Kinda cool if e.g. moths and such swarmed around them.)
