hhp quite dumb

Postby shubla » Mon May 24, 2021 11:08 pm

Basically sprucecaps often get enough HHP dmg so they die when some player comes, but pro players never die in pvp situations but get just ko'd and 0 risk.

Maybe change mechanics so that sprucecaps would not die either? Like decrease hhp dmg or something. Or increase it so pvprs would also die in combat situations with same likelihood as noobs.

but why do you think its dumb?

shouldn't a player be rewarded with general survivability by playing the game and increasing their stats like in practically every game ever?

This is why all the random wounds are dumb, but jorb doesn't understand why people don't like being wounded.

Faction PVP would certainly be more spicy if people were actually getting their characters killed more often instead of just KO'd. Being safe from death at any state of the game is pretty lame.

They added murder for this reason, but also.. and i say this as a noob whom definately would get 1 hit in a pvp situation, the point of uber maxing your char is to protect them, you can't punish a player for spamming con when that is the purpose of con... to keep your char protected.

Well yeah, the fact you are describing exists, there are 2 kinds of players, the one who knows how not to die, and the ones who don't.
But there is no gap between them, you can't say that one of them are pro players with 500+ hours played, and the others are sprucecaps who will just die before will have same amount time played.
Any sprucecap being killed by having too much wounds being outside/not hearthing back on KO/not logging off while enemy is on his base will immediately receive required experience, and will not repeat same mistake twice (if not totally dumb)
See no problem here.

It actually has nothing to do with the const really. The max amount of HHP a player can do to you scales with your max HHP. The issue is more the fact that noobs have no idea that running around with 70% health could very well get you killed where as if you have 100%, you're almost certainly safe. It's a dumb quirk from the way wounds work that you'll really only learn about through experimenting.

Right but Shubla's solution is to make it so more grievous damage than 70% is done, maybe even 100% so that those whom have that experience aren't protected, which IMO negates the idea of con and HP being useful to begin with. If it scales such that even the uninjured die, then what is the point in raising your HP at all?

Normally high HP means minor wounds will do less % of your total HP, I.E. taking 8 midge bites is alot more % of your health if you are at 100 HHP then if you are at 300.... if its possible to kill people at higher greivous damage, HHP becomes less useful as a whole.

Theoretically. In practice it would probably just make people less eager to PVP on equal footing as a loss would mean the death of your character.

Couple issues that add to this issue for new players:

Small wounds are frequent as an experience of wandering around as a nub, but they are flat values not % HHP. It's much easier to drop below "safety" levels with 100-200hhp, compared to 400hhp.

Beginners will have less access to healing. A combination of not knowing what's available, not having access to it, and not having someone deep enough in the alchemy system to help.

Beginners don't understand % hhp as a concept as bmjclark pointed out. I've introduced several friends and they interpret "don't go out with less than 70% hhp" to mean "I can go out if I have 70hhp". They don't scale this well if they level, and being a careless beginner who doesn't understand the seventy ways to get wounded complicates this.

And lastly... beginners just don't understand the impact of death in this game. There's nothing we can do on this one though, they have to deal with that themselves.

Honestly, the way to deal with this imo is contextual tips on the HP bar. Maybe have different colours of HHP symbolizing the different tiers of danger. 90-100% green, 70-90% yellow, <70% red. With a tooltip mouseover explaining that below 90% many animals can possibly kill you, and below 70% players can quite likely murder you in one fight.

PvP between factions seems to be a lot more common since death frequency got toned down. Isn't that more fun for pvpers? If every down was a death, I feel like several factions would already be basically killed out of the world.
