We have pit baked foods, but no pit, why is this?

You dig a hole, throw in some large stones, then add some wood, make a fire and heat up the stones.
Then after some hours, you remove the ash and burnt wood, and add in some meat or other food wrapped in leaves or some such.
Then on top you add dirt and lit up another fire, and let the food cook in heat of the rocks for many hours.

Some alternative methods probably exist, but the important thing is a pit/hole, heated up stones and something piled on top.

Result is slowly cooked very nice and juicy etc. meal.

- Of course, you could throw many items in one pit, to avoid large villages making thousands of them.
