Its not as thin branch as you think, you can use the stone to chip slot for the stone.

For early game balance I think its good that string is not required.

It would mess with balancing notably. I don't think it's worth the potential rammifications for a tiny bit of added realism.

That and string's a dick to find as a fresh spawn.

do you mean that we should use wooden blocks instead? if that's the case - how would we get blocks without having an axe first?

why? nettles and taproots are found with beggining explo*perc.

Hope you don't spawn in a large grassland.

World top axe quality has an impact on the quality of several industries. Butcher>Hide>String is an important one. But you also have Split>New Stone Axe spiralling. Stone axe quality currently (many argue shouldn't) impacts the quality of the best stone/ores you can harvest due to tool capping. This would also have a direct impact on several industry buildings and future stone tools by the impact of best Q stone. Stone axe quality impacting stick quality also pops up as a viable fuel source for some things.

Overall, I'd predict that early game string quality will speed up the entire metal industry since your top Q string is generally close to stone quality. It would help drag up lower quality branches, and you could in theory use it to annoyingly spiral if you had a high quality animal node. Mid-Late game it would put more emphasis on finding high Q hide animals. Best strings would mostly come from animal nodes, but very small bursts of high Q trolls would also provide some.

Actually impacts a lot, stone axes are a core part of crafting quality.

It could work if taproots were the ONLY string allowed. But it would still suck.

Allowing any string would mean getting higher q axes way faster, with hide straps. Or with flax / hemp. Or even by gardening stinging nettles from day 1...

surely wouldn't be an issue after walking away like 3 minimaps

Adding string to stone axe recipe is a slippery slope.
At the world start this will buff stone axes for hermits, they will be able to raise axe quality from high quality hide straps made of 100-200 quality hides, but will also lower the maximum possible quality of axe during world. I mean, top axe will be available only for fractions, who managed to get super high quality string, 300-600q troll hair or troll skin hide straps, right now highest quality axes is also available for people who managed to kill high quality chasm conch.

I'm not sure that I want to feel all the consequences that will come after that, highest quality of axe will be lowered roughly by 1/3 of current qualities, and there will be some axes made of super rare hides and chasm conch that will cost dozens if not hundreds of tokens, and the axe is the only tool that can give you high quality metal. All this will just lead to great gap between players in metal qualities.

but are all branches found by hearthlings thick enough for this? I don't think so!
