Take this step farther, and require that they be supplied wheat/barley(hay) as a nesting material. The quality of that caps the chickens in some way, and needs to be changed/replaced from time to time as they shit all over it and we don't let our chickens out during the day so obviously its freaking nasty in there. Maybe chickens can die if they have no nesting material or it is too dirty, and the quality of hay makes it last longer.
Any of you ever raise baby chickens before they can go outside? Nasty.
The hay could deteriorate into compost, and frankly the chickens could produce poop that then could be composted too. Pile all the overcomplicated mechanics on.
This isn't a completely serious suggestion, but the thought of those virtual cages full to the brim of shit is unpleasant.
