As far as I'm aware though, that only happens when you enter into a realm whose chat channel you don't already have, so it's just consistent with all other chat channels (PMs, party chats &c) becoming focused when they are first created in the client.

Precisely, and it's so annoying when you're in the middle of a conversation and suddenly half your chat is in another 'public' channel. Why do they have to be created 'automatically focused' though? Just knowing it is there is sufficient and it shouldn't auto switch, divulging potentially secret informations like village locations, in a public chat channel.

I feel like this being a setting seems reasonable. It's not always clear that this has happened, and I've more than once started talking in realm chat when I was intending to talk in village chat or party chat.
