Hearth Magic: Memories of Discovery

Postby WowGain » Fri Dec 17, 2021 4:11 am

This was discussed briefly during the actual update that introduced the other Memory of X Numen spells, but theres really no reason that there shouldn't be a spell among them to allow people to recover all their past discoveries. If you are at the point of play where you can gather and spend the numen required to cast any of these spells, you absolutely do not care about the tiny LP gain from going about rediscovering everything again. This was pointed out by myself and many others on the update thread, but to quote jorb:

jorb wrote:Cato the Elder's oft repeated shitpost that Carthage should be removed from the game was eventually heard. Do hammer us about your pet-peeves. We appreciate clear and persistent signal on changes you'd like to see made to the game, especially if they are low cost and high impact.

I'm hammering this pet peeve. Adding this one spell would be a major QoL improvement to the general procedure of recovering from a character death and would be a good reiteration on the widely appreciated update that added the rest of them.

+1 I think the discovery system is stupid and doesn't belong in the game at all (maybe except for the discovery LP tho, that seems like a cool incentive to find new stuff). But atleast this seems like a decent compromise if we really need to keep it for some weird reason.

The discovery system is needed to not immediately clog up newbies' crafting menus with stuff that's not going to be relevant to them for ages. Some other games solve the problem in similar ways (for example, Terraria doesn't show crafting options until you have the materials for them in your inventory and/or a chest you have open at that moment).

It isn't though, even with all skills and recipes unlocked you never really feel like it's remotely a problem, much less with the default client feature to search for recipes.
On the other hand, having to do bizarre aztec rituals with buckets of x y z substance to magically unlock recipes is stupid and counter intuitive as it gets, not to mention the pages and pages of posts about people being confused why they can't craft/build something.
Also, buying a skill and immediately being able to see the cool stuff you can now make is far more rewarding than it being still locked behind some invisible obscure discovery requirement.

Bumping this, easy iteration on an already widely enjoyed addition to hearth magic.

It should be a spell of sorts you an use on an item. If none of your ancestors had discovered it, you get some clear indication that this is a thing and no numen is spent.

If any of your ancestors had discovered the item, it will open flower-menu like "Contemplation & Meditation" asking if you want to confirm spending numen for "Ancestral Guidance" (or whatever you'd like to name it) to learn the discovery.

One major pitfall: you need discovery of "Bar of Cast Iron" and use the Hearth Magic on said item with confirmation that you discover something. But you actually only discover the "Bar of Common Metal" and "Bar of Any Metal" -input types. (This is based on how Material accounts work.)

Why shouldn't you just rediscover everything you did? Why should we make our lives harder?
