Bottles and Jars

I just feel silly saying this, but why can't I put anything in bottles or jars?

I feel like that's where I should be able to put my honey, vinegar, rennet, etc.

Why are they so limited in terms of use? I don't want to carry a whole bucket of them around, just little amounts.
