Barrels for bulk storage

Postby Liss12 » Sun Feb 20, 2022 6:53 am

I was wondering why barrels so underutilized in hafen compared to how much they were used historically for bulk storage. Things like fruits, mushrooms, fish- it all beg to be stored in nifty compact barrels instead of ugly piles exposed to elements. Perhaps we could even store meat in barrels instead of meat cupboards which is cringe tbh. We could use basic barrels or add new specific barrel for non-liquid products.

I support this.

Can be used to transport bulk items without the need for a wheelbarrow. Would make trading easier and less expensive (no need for glue for barrow).

Mostly against this idea because it's generally harder to tell what's in a barrel than what's in a pile. People mixing milk/flour barrels is bad enough without adding in mixing up pork vs beef barrels.

Although, tbf, mass storage systems via barter stands are the actual way to go.

I mean, you don't HAVE to use the barrels, you know? No way Jorb would remove normal stockpiles after spending all the time implementing them. Plus I'd imagine there'd be an image icon on the barrel itself akin to water and milk and beer.

Barrels are easier to tell than cupboards tho.

There are a LOT of barrel types, it'd be cool to have even more where historically accurate.
I'd rather have tables support larger fruit/vegetable stockpiles on top, it'd look like an outdoor grocery without everything being piled in the mud. Maybe a specific fruit-stand box that displays its stockpile, if they can't dual-use tables.

Variable material barrels and cupboards when?

My guess would be that Sevenless meant how you can mix different types of milk in one barrel and different types of flour in another barrel. Not that those two mix together.

Basically no one plays zoomed in enough to actually see the barrel labels. What zodd said though: I meant "mixing up their places" when putting them back, my bad not clarifying.

I guess my point is we already have hard to sort/distinguish bulk storage. Swapping it for another that's effectively the same seems pointless. You'd still have to memorize what's what for barrels or use those little display signs.
